What an amazing year for the PCD Artist Project! I could not have asked for a more amazing group of artist who answered our last minute call to save this year’s project. I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank each and every artist who participated in the third annual PCD Artist Project. With their talents I’m am happy to report that we’ve raised $1,000 and counting for the PCD Smiles cheer package program. Exhibit merchandise for the PCD Artist Project 2022 will be available for purchase throughout the next eighteen months. Please help us continue the PCD Smiles mission for shipping smiles to hospitalized PCD patients through the gift of a cheer package, no matter their age. We hope that you enjoy our video presentation of the 2022 exhibit.

“Primary ciliary dyskinesia is a genetically and clinically heterogeneous syndrome. Impaired function of motile cilia causes failure of mucociliary clearance. Patients typically present with neonatal respiratory distress of unknown cause and then continue to have a daily wet cough, recurrent chest infections, perennial rhinosinusitis, otitis media with effusion, and bronchiectasis. Approximately 50% of patients have situs inversus, and infertility is common. While understanding of the underlying genetics and disease mechanisms have substantially advanced in recent years, there remains a paucity of evidence for treatment.” ~ Primary ciliary dyskinesia in the genomics age: JS Lucas, SD Davis, H Omran, A Shoemark - The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, 2020

“Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare inherited disorder caused by defects in the structure and/or function of cilia. Cilia are tiny hair-like structures, which are required to move fluids and particles in various parts of the body, including the airways. If there are defects in the cilia lining the airways, the body is unable to expel foreign material and clear mucus. This can lead to pulmonary complications, including frequent infections of the lungs, ears, throat and sinuses. People with PCD may have persistent or recurrent infections, which can significantly disrupt their quality of life and sometimes lead to permanent damage and life-threatening complications.” ~ Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

“Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is usually inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder and presents with upper and lower respiratory tract infection, and mirror image arrangement in around 50% of cases. Cilia dysfunction is also implicated in a wider spectrum of disease, including polycystic liver and kidney disease, central nervous system problems including retinopathy and hydrocephalus, and biliary atresia. Cilia are complex structures, containing more than 250 proteins; recent studies have begun to locate PCD genes scattered throughout the genome.” ~ Bush A, Chodhari R, Collins N, et al Primary ciliary dyskinesia: current state of the art Archives of Disease in Childhood 2007;92:1136-1140.

Today’s featured artist is Mel LaPour with her submission titled “Transition”.

“Clinical symptoms in PCD affect the entire respiratory tract; the majority of symptoms occur on a chronic, daily basis and start soon after birth. At least 80% of newborn babies with PCD develop neonatal respiratory distress despite a full-term gestation, with increased work of breathing, tachypnea, and prevalence of upper and middle lobe atelectasis on chest radiographs. Most PCD patients are well immediately after birth, but develop respiratory distress at 12–24 hr of life (as opposed to other causes of respiratory distress in term neonates (e.g., transient tachypnea of the newborn—TTN), which often present in the first few hours after birth). A small proportion of PCD patients are discharged home on day 1 of life but are then hospitalized with respiratory distress within the first few weeks of life. Often misdiagnosed with TTN or pneumonia, PCD infants frequently require supplemental oxygen for days to weeks.” ~ Diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of primary ciliary dyskinesia: PCD foundation consensus recommendations based on state of the art review - Adam J. Shapiro MD, Maimoona A. Zariwala PhD, Thomas Ferkol MD, Stephanie D. Davis MD, Scott D. Sagel MD, PhD, Sharon D. Dell MD, Margaret Rosenfeld MD, Kenneth N. Olivier MD, Carlos Milla MD, Sam J.
