Turn treatment-time into play-time with the hula hoop. Hula hoops offer a great way to get in some airway clearance disguised as fun. The uncoordinated breaths that naturally happen combined with the shaking movement mobilizes secretions and gets your PCD loved one coughing. Don’t stop just because they are coughing. Remember you want the coughs to help clear the naturally occurring mucus that our bodies produce daily. Without working cilia the PCD patient’s body can’t clear the approximate one point five quarts of mucus that their body makes every single day. Instead the person with PCD must manually clear these secretions every single day of their lives to ward off disease progression and permanent damage to their airways. Airway clearance every single day, at least twice a day when healthy or more when sick, gets extremely boring and frustrating. Shake things up and try some airway clearance techniques that are outside the box to keep things fresh and interesting.

If you’re struggling to get your child engaged with their airway clearance techniques try turning airway clearance into play, it could help lessen the burden of persuading your child to do their treatments. If you’re an adult, remember that the best airway clearance technique for you is the one that you will actually do. There are tons of airway clearance techniques and tons of outside the box ideas as well. Experiment today and put the fun back into your life. Remember airway hygiene is an important part of primary ciliary dyskinesia care.
