Turn treatment-time into fun-time with hiking. Hiking can serve many purposes when you have primary ciliary dyskinesia. First and foremost it can help open up your airways to allow your stuck mucus more room to move, hopefully it moves extremely well when coughing while hiking. Exercise has been shown to have excellent non-pharmaceutical bronchodilation effects to the airways, which is extremely beneficial for those with PCD. In fact some experts in PCD claim that exercise is a better bronchodilator for PCD patients than the pharmaceutical bronchodilators currently on the market. Although caution with this claim should be taken given the small studies and few antidotal reports until there is more longitudinal data with a bigger patient study pool. Remember that once the mucus slips into the smaller airways more aggressive airways clearance techniques are required to get the mucus back out of those areas.

Another area of hiking that is beneficial to primary ciliary dyskinesia patients is the sun. Yes the actual sun and it’s vitamin d. Most PCD patients are deficient in vitamin d, so encouraging sun exposure daily is a great way to help supplement vitamin d for your PCD loved one.

If you’re struggling to get your child engaged with their airway clearance techniques try turning airway clearance into play, it could help lessen the burden of persuading your child to do their treatments. If you’re an adult, remember that the best airway clearance technique for you is the one that you will actually do. There are tons of airway clearance techniques and tons of outside the box ideas as well. Experiment today and put the fun back into your life. Remember airway hygiene is an important part of primary ciliary dyskinesia care.
