Turn treatment-time into play-time with sledding. It takes being creative to get airway clearance into your schedule and still have fun while not making airway clearance seem like a punishment. After the next big snow try moving your airway clearance session outside with a bit of sledding. Sledding helps get your heart rate up and increase irregular breathing patterns that can help mobilize secretions and include coughing. The down side is that you want to make sure your PCDers mouth and nose are protected from the cold by scarves of other outdoor protective products like a face mask for skiing or other snow time activities. Airways have a built in mechanism to protect themselves from the cold, and that is to retract. This airway retraction can cause discomfort and stop secretions in their tracks. That’s not what you want. You want to mobilize the secretions and induce coughing to help remove the secretions the the airway completely. So exercise some precautions and get outside and e that fresh powder. But above all remember to cough, cough it up and spit it out. Remember airway hygiene is an important part of primary ciliary dyskinesia care.
