Today’s featured artist is Candice Colbert with her submission titled! “Wisps of Cilia”.
In healthy individuals, cilia clear airway mucus, bacteria and debris by coordinated beating. PCD is caused by abnormality of ciliary beating, which is often, but not always, associated with abnormal ciliary structure (figures 1 and 2). In addition to the lungs, motile cilia are found in the middle ear, paranasal sinuses, female reproductive tract and ependyma of the brain. Therefore, the majority of patients with PCD have non-chest symptoms; for example, in a cohort of 78 patients, 95% reported recurrent otitis media and 54% had significant sinus disease. ~ Diagnosis and management of primary ciliary dyskinesia; Jane S Lucas, Andrea Burgess, Hannah M Mitchison, Eduardo Moya, Michael Williamson, Claire Hogg: on behalf of the National PCD Service, UK
The PCD Artist Project is a collaborative effort by artist to raise awareness for PCD or primary ciliary dyskinesia and support the PCD Smiles program. Each artist who submitted art work to the project either has PCD or has a PCD friend or family member.
